An intention is an energetic signal that you want to bring some thing into your life. It is a signal that works inward – to your Self – and outward – to others, the universe, God. When you set an intention, you are saying that you are ready for what you want to come into your life, and you are creating the time and space for it to come through. It sounds very new-Age-y and woo-woo, but science behind how and why intentions work is proven, from studies of prayers to quantum physics. With the New Moon in Gemini today beginning a new lunar cycle, and a perfect time to broadcast intentions, I thought it would be a perfect day to do a deep dive into how intentions work. Learning about quantum physics and the science of intentions changed my life, quite frankly. Once I knew that I was energy, and I was constantly creating my own reality with the thoughts and emotions I broadcast into the quantum field, I began to take them more seriously and act with more intentionality.
Quantum physics has proven that atoms are “empty space” – 99.99999% energy and 0.0001% matter. As I sit here in my chair, I am technically not sitting on a chair, I am hovering slightly above it as the electromagnetic force of the electrons making up the atoms in my body interact with the electrons of the chair. Everything in the universe is energy, and to take this even further, quantum physicists discovered something called the “observer effect,” which demonstrates that electrons behave differently depending on who is observing them and turn from waves into particles when observed. So, quantum physics has proven that at a subatomic level, energy responds to our mindful attention to become matter, and everything in our universe is made of energy. We communicate to the quantum field through our thoughts and feelings, which are energy too – electrical impulses that can be easily measured by EEG and other devices.
To take this a step further, I want to share an incredible study done at the HeartMath Research center on the physiology of emotions and the heart. There, they have proven the link between our emotional states and our heart rhythms – negative emotions create erratic and disorganized heart rhythms and positive emotions produce highly ordered, cohered patterns. One study had a group of ten individuals who were well practiced in using techniques (i.e. meditation) to build heart-focused coherence. As part of the study, these individuals produced strong, elevated feelings of love and appreciation and then hold vials containing DNA in ionized water. They were asked to set the intention to either wind or unwind the strands of DNA. These individuals produced significant changes in the shape of the DNA samples, sometimes by up to 25%. It was only when the subjects held heightened emotions and clear objectives together that they were able to produce the effect set by their intention.
One more thing I want to share is that while I was writing this blog post, I had some fears about it being too science-forward and difficult to read, so I took a walk in the woods and turned on a podcast – the Goop podcast featuring Oprah. A few minutes in, Oprah declares that the principle of intention changed her life. A clear sign from the universe that yes, I should write this blog post on intentions! Oprah describes intention, as she learned it from Gary Zukav's books, as the reason why you are doing a thing. The energy of the intention, she says, exists before the cause that creates the effect, and it is actually the intention that creates the desired effect. To take it a step further, if your intention comes from a place of lack or fear, that will effect the outcome. In 1989 she began to rule her life and business by this principle of intentionality, with her intention being serving the greater good and doing what felt authentic to her - not what pleased others. Quantum physics is amazing, but if Oprah’s life is not an argument for the power of intentions, I don’t know what is!
When you are writing out your list of intentions for today’s New Moon, or setting any intentions out, keep in mind quantum physics, and the truth that you are deeply affecting your future reality with the intentions that you set. When we set an intention, whether we express it aloud, in our journal, or through an action, we are sending out a distinct energetic signal to the universal energy field about what we want, which brings us closer to that desired reality. Harnessing positive emotions helps catalyze these intentions to bring the intended potential into our reality. By being clear about the intention behind every action, every thought, we can shape the effect, as Oprah calls it, essentially, our future.
My intention with this blog is to share what fascinates me, what I’m reading about, learning about, and practicing for my wellbeing, and for my spirituality. My intention with Inner Light is for it to be a space to heal the body, the mind, and the spirit. A place where anyone can come to discover and experiment with new healing modalities, whether that be through infrared light, an event we hold, or by using a product in our Shop. And just by setting foot in an infrared sauna, or coming to Inner Light, I believe all of our guests are declaring an intention to heal themselves, a powerful act in and of itself.
